Chronicle of Mississauga Chinese Baptist Church
There was not an established Chinese church in Etobicoke-Mississauga area in 1977. The leaders in Toronto Chinese Baptist Church (TCBC) started a Wednesday prayer meeting at 3434 Cawthra Road, Mississauga City Baptist Church (it was a hut then) to prepare people in the hopes that a Chinese church could be established.
On August 27, 1978 afternoon, the first Sunday worship was started and the Toronto Chinese Baptist Church – Mississauga Mission was born. The worshipers were some members of Toronto Chinese Baptist Church who lived in Etobicoke-Mississauga area, some mission minded brothers and sisters who lived in Toronto and North York and some believers who lived in Etobicoke-Mississauga area. The afternoon Sunday worship service, the Sunday school and prayer meeting on Wednesday were held at Bethel Baptist Church, 1801 Dundas Street East, Mississauga.
After a year, in 1979, space became insufficient; Adult, Youth and Children Sunday school classes were cramped in the small basement of the church. Later, when we found out that Mississauga City Baptist Church had built a church capable of hosting 300 worshipers, our mother church, on our behalf, negotiated with Mississauga City Baptist Church. Even though the church building was brand new, the brothers and sisters in Mississauga City Baptist Church gladly accommodated us in their basement (larger than Bethel Baptist Church’s) during the afternoon hours. We were grateful and we always kept the place clean after use.
Two year later, in 1981, we felt that our afternoon hours hindered our growth. We expressed our concern to TCBC. At that time the property at 3066 Given Road was for sale. The property belonged to a non-profit organization and was used as a residence for persons who were mentally challenged. With the help from TCBC and Baptist Convention Ontario Quebec, we purchased the property. With renovation , we had our own place to worship at last. Shortly thereafter, in 1985, we pioneered into English Sunday worship service. In 1986, TCBC encouraged us to become an independent local church. Therefore, on March 30, 1986 a new church, Mississauga Chinese Baptist Church, was born. In the following years, we experienced growth due to influx of immigrants from Hong Kong. Worship service attendance was at the maximum capacity. Sunday school ran out of rooms. Fellowship experienced crowdedness during meetings. Therefore the building committee was diligently seeking new facility and pondering whether to build or to purchase an existing building. Finally God led us to purchase this present location.
美 城 華 人 浸 信 會 簡 史
1977年 多 倫 多 華 人浸信會 鑑 於 西 區 怡 陶 碧 谷 以 至 密 西 沙 加 市都 沒 有 華 人 教 會 , 便 借 用 3434 Cawthra Road , 現 今 Mississauga City Baptist Church 的 地 址 ( 當 時 只 有 一 間 木 屋 ) 每 星 期 三 晚 上 開 始 了 祈 禱 會 , 預 備 人 心 發 展 基 址 。
1978年 8月 2 7 日 下 午 開 始 了 西 區 第 一 次 的 華 人 主 日 崇 拜 ， 那 時 名 為 多 倫 多 華 人 浸 信 會 西 區 分 堂 ， 參 加 聚 會 的 是 多 浸 一 些 住 在 密 西 沙 加 和 怡 陶 碧 谷 的 會 友 ， 並 一 些 在 附 近 居 住 的 華 人 基 督 徒 。 也 有 一 些 熱 心 開 荒 的 弟 兄 姊 妹 ， 從 多 市 或 北 約 遠 道 而 來 的 。 那 時 是 借 用 密 西 沙 加 登 打 士 東 街 1801 號 的 伯 特 利 浸 信 會 的 堂 址 聚 會 。 ( 包 括 主 日 下 午 的 主 日 學 及 崇 拜 ， 並 星 期 三 晚 上 的 祈 禱 會 。 )
經 過 差 不 多 一 年 的 時 間 ( 1 9 7 9 )， 因 覺 得 那 處 堂 址 地 方 太 小 ， 主 日 學 上 課 時 課 室 不 足 ， 成 年 、 青 年 、 兒 童 主 日 學 都 一 同 擠 在 小 小 的 地 庫 中 。 後 來 得 知 Cawthra Road 的 舊 址 己 建 成 一 間 可 容 三 百 多 人 的 堂 址 ， 母 會 便 替 我 們 聯 絡 ， 借 用 該 堂 址 在 主 日 下 午 崇 拜 。 那 處 地 方 較 大 ， 地 庫 也 多 些 房 間 ， 他 們 雖 然 是 新 建 的 堂 址 ， 卻 慷 慨 地 借 給 我 們 使 用 ， 使 我 們 很 受 感 動 , 並 且 盡 量 保 持 地 方 清 潔 。 我 們 借 用 Cawthra Road 的 堂 址 約 兩 年 後 ( 1 9 8 1 )， 漸 覺 在 主 日 下 午 崇 拜 和 主 日 學 ， 是 很 難 有 發 展 的 ， 後 來 與 母 會 商 量 ， 剛 好 3066 Given Road 的 房 子 出 售 ， 那 地 方 本 來 是 某 機 構 用 作 一 些 低 智 商 人 士 的 宿 舍 ， 現 在 改 變 計 劃 ， 所 以 將 房 子 出 售 ， 母 會 便 為 我 們 購 買 ， 再 經 一 些 室 內 的 改 裝 ， 便 成 為 我 們 自 己 擁 有 的 堂 址 ， 且 於 1 9 8 5 年 開 始 了 英 文 主 日 崇 拜 ， 直 至 1986 年 ， 我 堂 人 數 漸 增 ， 母 會 也 主 張 我 們 自 立 ， 所 以 在 8 6 年 3 月 3 0 日 ， 我 堂 便 成 立 為 美 城 華 人 浸 信 會 。而 跟 著 的 幾 年 正 值 香 港 移 民 潮 的 時 候 ， 美 浸 人 數 激 增 ， 崇 拜 禮 堂 爆 滿 ， 主 日 學 、 團 契 都 不 夠 地 方 應 用 ， 所 以 擴 堂 小 組 的 弟 兄 們 四 處 找 尋 新 堂 址 ， 自 建 或 購 買 ， 最 後 蒙 神 引 領 購 得 現 用 堂 址 .
